Cairo Alexandria Desert Road: Kilometres, Junctions and What Lies Along It
The Cairo Alexandria Desert Road explained: lanes since 2015, the widening to eight lanes, kilometre markers, the 26th of July junction and the Alexandria end, with dated official sources.

Key takeaways
- Since the 2015 expansion the road carries six lanes each way, two for trucks; in December 2022 the Transport Minister said a widening to eight lanes each way was under way over 160 km.
- Official addresses on the road: Sheikh Zayed's city authority at kilometre 15, New Sphinx at kilometre 55 and Sadat City's authority at kilometre 93 (New Urban Communities Authority directory).
- The 26th of July Corridor development runs 33 km from the desert road junction to the Nile Corniche in Agouza (Cabinet, 1 October 2022).
- The 30 km from the Alexandria toll gate to Carrefour could not be widened, so bridges at Agami, Amreya and Kafouri were rebuilt instead.
- In October 2026 a seven to ten million budget sat around the apartment median in Sheikh Zayed (EGP 8,900,000) and above it in 6th of October (EGP 6,000,000).

The Cairo Alexandria Desert Road is the motorway that leaves Giza's western edge and crosses the Western Desert to Alexandria. Since its 2015 upgrade it carries six lanes each way, and in December 2022 the Transport Minister said a widening to eight lanes each way was under way over 160 km. If you are weighing a home on the Cairo end of it, the two places that matter are Sheikh Zayed and 6th of October; their full lists sit on Compounds in El Sheikh Zayed and Compounds in 6th of October City.
This guide is about the road itself: how it grew, where the kilometre markers fall, where the big junctions are, and what living a few minutes off it looks like for a family that drives everywhere. Facts about the road come from the Ministry of Transport, the Cabinet and the New Urban Communities Authority, each with its date. Figures for homes come from developers' published numbers on Masharf, read in October 2026.
What is the Cairo Alexandria Desert Road?
It is the inland route between Egypt's two largest cities, the one that keeps to the desert rather than the farmland. People search for it under three names (Alexandria desert road, Cairo Alexandria desert road and Alexandria Cairo desert road), and they all mean the same strip of tarmac. On the Cairo side it is the spine that Sheikh Zayed and 6th of October grew along; further out it serves New Sphinx and Sadat City before running on to Alexandria.
The road is older than most people assume. According to Transport Minister Kamel Al-Wazir, speaking on 5 December 2022, it was first built in 1935 as a road six metres wide made of stone bound with bitumen. It was later paved to two lanes in each direction, and that is how many drivers still remember it.

How many lanes does the desert road have now?
Six in each direction, two of them for trucks, since the 2015 expansion. In the same December 2022 statement the minister said that expansion separated trucks from cars, made the road free-flowing with overpasses at the main intersections, and cut accidents by 38%. The work he described as under way would take it to eight lanes in each direction, four of them for trucks, over a length of 160 km, carried out by the Armed Forces Engineering Authority.
Two points matter to anyone who will drive it every day. First, trucks have their own lanes, which takes much of the stress out of a daily commute. Second, the 160 km figure is the length of the widening, not the full length of the route between the two cities; we have not found an official total length stated with a date, so we leave it out.
| Stage | Lanes | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Original road, 1935 | One carriageway, 6 m wide | Transport Minister, 5 December 2022 |
| Later paving | 2 each way | Transport Minister, 5 December 2022 |
| 2015 expansion | 6 each way, 2 of them for trucks | Transport Minister, 5 December 2022 |
| Widening under way in 2022, over 160 km | 8 each way, 4 of them for trucks | Transport Minister, 5 December 2022 |

Kilometre markers: where the towns sit on the road
Kilometre posts are how people give directions on this road, and they are also how the state writes official addresses along it. The New Urban Communities Authority's directory of city authorities, read on 25 October 2026, lists these addresses on the Cairo Alexandria Desert Road:
| Official address in the directory | What it is |
|---|---|
| Kilometre 15, behind the Crazy Water park | Sheikh Zayed City Development Authority |
| Kilometre 55 | New Sphinx City (the authority's own description of the city's position) |
| Kilometre 93 | Sadat City Development Authority |

Read together, the addresses climb as you head away from Cairo: Sheikh Zayed's authority is the closest of the three, New Sphinx follows 40 kilometres further out, and Sadat City's authority sits at kilometre 93. For a buyer, that ordering tells you something simple. Sheikh Zayed and the 6th of October districts beside it are the stretch where the commute to Cairo is shortest, while New Sphinx is a longer drive in exchange for newer, emptier land.

Where does the 26th of July Corridor meet the desert road?
The corridor is the other half of the West Cairo grid, and its western end is the junction with the desert road. When Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly toured the works on 1 October 2022, the Cabinet said the development of the 26th of July Corridor runs 33 km, from its intersection with the Alexandria Desert Road to the Nile Corniche in Agouza, in four sections, alongside a parallel axis of about 12 km with four lanes in each direction.
On the same tour the Engineering Authority's representative described the first section, from the desert road to the Ring Road, as 11.3 km with 23 bridges, widened to six lanes northbound and eight southbound. Almost three years later, on 13 September 2025, Housing Minister Sherif El-Sherbiny inspected the next round of work on the stretch between the desert road junction and the Wahat Road inside Sheikh Zayed and 6th of October: new lanes on the central island, better asphalt, more signs and safe pedestrian crossings. He did not give a finish date, so we do not give one either.
What this means at home level: a house within a few minutes of that junction can choose between two ways into the city, the corridor towards Mohandessin and Zamalek, or the desert road and Ring Road towards Giza and the south. That choice is worth a lot on the mornings when one of them is blocked.

The West Nile monorail line follows the 26th of July Corridor; every station on it is listed in Egypt Monorail.
The Alexandria end: why the last 30 km are different
Near Alexandria the road changes character. In his December 2022 statement the minister explained that the 30 km from the Alexandria toll gate to the Carrefour area could not be widened because of limited space and the utility networks under it, so the plan there was to rebuild bridges instead:
- The Agami bridge was upgraded to four lanes over 950 m, and the minister described it as completed.
- A new U-turn bridge at Amreya, three lanes over 810 m, built by the Nile Company for Construction and Roads, was also described as completed.
- The Kafouri bridge was being upgraded to four lanes over 850 m and was still in progress at that date.
For someone buying on the Cairo end, this stretch matters only on summer weekends, when the whole of Cairo seems to head for the coast at once. It is the reason the last half hour into Alexandria can feel slower than the first two hours out of Giza.
Cairo Alexandria Desert Road on the map: the Sheikh Zayed and 6th of October stretch
On a map, the part of the road that most of our readers care about is the first stretch out of Giza, where Sheikh Zayed sits on one side and the districts of 6th of October spread beyond it. The road works as the outer edge of both cities, the 26th of July Corridor cuts through them towards the Nile, and the Wahat Road is the third. Three roads, three exits, and the house you choose decides which of them you will use most.
Our catalogue gives a sense of what that stretch costs. These are the medians of developers' own starting figures in each area, as published in our catalogue and read in late October 2026 (resale offers are not included):
| Area | Unit type | Projects counted | Lowest starting figure (EGP) | Median starting figure (EGP) | Read on |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sheikh Zayed | Apartment | 22 | 2,357,333 | 8,900,000 | 25 October 2026 |
| 6th of October | Apartment | 42 | 1,987,400 | 6,000,000 | 25 October 2026 |
| New Zayed | Apartment | 16 | 5,100,000 | 9,090,577 | 24 October 2026 |
| Sheikh Zayed | All types | 43 | 2,357,333 | 7,841,000 | 25 October 2026 |
If your budget is between seven and ten million spread over about ten years, the table says something useful: in Sheikh Zayed that budget sits right around the middle of the market for an apartment, while in 6th of October it reaches above the median. The road itself does not change that; what changes is how close to the junctions you want to be.

Homes a few minutes off the road where the developer is still selling
These four projects are on or beside the desert road, or reached from it, according to their own pages, and each had units from the developer inside a budget of seven to ten million in October 2026. We list the developer's figure only.
| Project | Where its page puts it | Entry unit from the developer | Plan | Handover |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KAIA Compound El Sheikh Zayed | Directly on the desert road, Sheikh Zayed | 56 m² studio, EGP 7,008,606 | 10% down, 8 years | June 2029 |
| Village West Dorra El Sheikh Zayed | Sheikh Zayed, about 3 minutes from the 26th of July Corridor | One-bedroom, 65 to 95 m², from EGP 7,000,000 | 10% down, 8 years | January 2028 |
| WESTRICT El Sheikh Zayed | On the desert road, Sheikh Zayed | 91 m² one-bedroom, EGP 9,300,000 | 5% down, 10 years | June 2030 |
| ZED Project El Sheikh Zayed | Central Sheikh Zayed, served by the desert road and the corridor | 60 m² studio, EGP 9,000,000 | 10 years | October 2030 |
KAIA is the one that sits right on the road, according to the developer's own description, which makes it the quickest exit towards both Cairo and the coast. Village West is the earliest handover of the four, so it suits a family that wants to stop paying rent sooner. WESTRICT is mixed use with offices and hotel stays on the same plot, and its 5% down payment is the lightest entry in this group. ZED is the one deepest inside Sheikh Zayed, and its page puts Nile University and Dar Al Fouad Hospital close by.

For the bigger picture of everything built along the road, including the ready communities that only trade between owners, see our separate guide to what is built along the road.
If the road decides your search, the developers' listings are split by town and type: Apartments for Sale in El Sheikh Zayed covers the flats a few exits from the 26th of July junction, and Townhouses for Sale in 6th of October City gathers the houses further along.
What usually stops buyers here
Handover. In the four projects above, handover dates run from January 2028 to October 2030. If you are paying rent today, the gap between the first instalment and the keys is the real cost to plan for, so ask for the handover date in the contract, not in the brochure.
Down payment. The entry units above ask between 5% and 10% down. On a seven to ten million budget that means roughly 465,000 to 701,000 pounds on signing, going by the figures in the table, with the rest spread over eight to ten years.
Developer or resale. Everything quoted here is the developer's current figure. Ready homes along the road are mostly traded between owners, and those offers are a different market with different paperwork; we do not mix them into the figures in this guide.

Is the Cairo Alexandria Desert Road the same as the Ismailia desert road?
No. The two are often searched together, but the Cairo Ismailia Desert Road leaves Cairo to the north-east, past cities such as Obour and Shorouk, while the Alexandria road leaves Giza to the north-west. If a listing or a friend says "the desert road" without a city, ask which one; the answer changes the whole side of Cairo you would live on.

How to use the road when you choose a home
- Map your daily drive first: office, school and club. If two of the three are east of the Ring Road, a home near the 26th of July junction will save you more time than one further out.
- Ask which exit the project's gate actually uses. Our project pages say which roads serve each project; a project "on the desert road" with its gate on a service road behaves differently from one with direct access.
- Check the handover year against the road works. The 26th of July widening between the desert road and the Wahat Road was still being worked on in September 2025, and the official statements give no finish date.
- Price the budget by area, not by road. The table above shows the same budget lands in different parts of the market in Sheikh Zayed, 6th of October and New Zayed.
When you have a shortlist, the full lists of projects with their current developer figures are on Compounds in El Sheikh Zayed and Compounds in 6th of October City.
